What investors look for/ expect from social entrepreneurs? participants: all guests + Baltic investors and entrepreneurs Guests: (in order of presentations) Andrew Muirhead, Scotland Andrew Muirhead is the Chief Executive Officer of Inspiring Scotland. Andrew spent his early career in Retail Banking before gaining extensive experience in senior roles covering Regional Management, Operations, Credit and Planning. He was made a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Banking in Scotland and also gained an MBA from Glasgow University. Non-executive roles have included Broadcasting, Education and Community Development. In 1997 Andrew moved from the Private sector to lead the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland through a period of unprecedented growth. In a 12 year period he developed a wide range of innovative programmes to support Scottish charities to scale and to help tackle key social challenges both in the UK and in developing countries in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and South America. His pioneering work was recognised when he received a High Commendation in the 2008 Beacon Prize for Leadership. It was his passion for the Voluntary Sector and the effective use of money and other resources that led him to travel for much of 2006 and consider various models from throughout the world which sought to create social change. This learning led him to found Inspiring Scotland; a venture which was launched in January 2009 to support talented charitable enterprises with both money and skills; it enjoys wide support from Government, Charitable Funds and Private Individuals including a number of Scotland’s leading entrepreneurs. Micheal Pyner, Northern Ireland/ England Micheal Pyner is the Chief Executive Officer of the Shoreditch Trust, a charitable regeneration agency that operates for the benefit of Shoreditch and its people. Micheal designed, created and guided a series of new social, creative and community enterprises and initiatives that support individuals, groups or organisations to look differently at how they approach communities., e.g. London’s first eco restaurant, Acorn House and Water House Restaurant in Shoreditch – both delivering profits back into regenerating Shoreditch. Micheal is a board member of many organizations in the UK; leads the climate change initiative for the New Deal for Communities programme, he is a key advisor to the UK Government on social enterprise, chair of the Development Trust Association, a founder member of ACEVO’s European Third Sector Network and a fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts in recognition of his innovative approach to culture-led regeneration initiatives. Shoreditch Trust is an award-winning regeneration charity/limited company operating in inner east London, established in 2000, committed to improving housing, health, education, community safety, employment, environment and business in the local area - they are community led but at the same time commercially aware, and know the value of people as well as the dynamics of business. The Trust has developed a sustainability theme as an integral part of the regeneration programme, delivering long-term social and environmental benefits through a range of social enterprise projects: Shoreditch Trust has delivered over 400 projects ranging in size from the Healthy Living Centre and Community Maternity Facility to the refurbishment of Primary School playgrounds and providing Christmas lunches for elders groups. Peter W. Heller, Luxembourg Peter W. Heller, completed his Ph.D studies in Economics and Philosophy at the Universities of St. Gallen and Lausanne/Switzerland as well as in Freiburg/Germany in 1988. From 1990-1997 he served as the City of Freiburg's Deputy Mayor for the Environment. Peter W. Heller has been the Executive Director of the Canopus Foundation - a private family foundation - since 1997. He is co-founder of the BASE Foundation in Basel/Switzerland and has served as a board member of the Foundation since 2001. Since 1998, Peter W. Heller has played strategic roles as an early-stage investor and co-founder of solar and wind enterprises, as well as energy efficiency technology manufacturers. He serves as chair of the supervisory board of S.A.G. Solarstrom AG, a publicly-listed company in Germany, and is also a member of the supervisory board of Streb AG. Peter W. Heller is the sole shareholder and CEO of forseo. forseo acquires capital for investment in projects, start-ups and other cleantech businesses including renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, the green automotive sector, biomaterials and green chemical, hydrogen and recycling technologies. Canopus Foundation promotes private social investment and social enterprise in order to fight poverty and environmental degradation, and provides business development assistance for social entrepreneurs in developing countries working in the field of clean energy technologies. Oliver Maxwell, Denmark Oliver Maxwell is the founder and director of the Copenhagen city honey cooperative. Olivers approach focuses on using networks and partnerships to get social enterprise projects off the ground. The Copenhagen City Honey Cooperative involves socially excluded groups in urban beekeeping and works with NGOs, housing associations and local businesses. Ilover had more than 10 years experience in social enterprise development, set up Denmarks national social enterprise support system and developed and wrote one of the first municipal social enterprise growth strategies in the UK. Ali Mohtadi Tabrizi, Sweden Ali Mohtadi Tabrizi is an entrepreneur and business developer. His work range from IT and mobile to design. Former incubator manager of Katapult of Sweden, recently founded a social enterprise empowering consumers - Shopgun. "I want to create innovative solutions, and develop unique ideas that benefit more than just myself locally in the region I live in. I focus on and care deeply for unique and innovative concepts and business models. My mission is to make a positive impact through ease of use and intuition, rather than global sustainable development (which is unsexy and ineffective). Meanwhile, I make sure that the journey is fun and energetic, both for me and my surroundings. I want to create a safe, diverse, healthy and just world with clean water, clean air and clean soil. Where economic, ecological and moral justice is present and in which we live elegant and beautiful lives. For me, economic viability is a subordinate factor." Rod Schwartz, England Rod Schwartz is the Chief Executive Officer of ClearlySo, the first online marketplace for social business & enterprise, commerce and investment.. Rod worked for 17 years (from 1980) as a research analyst and senior manager with investments banks PaineWebber, Lehman and Paribas. He founded Catalyst Fund Management & Research in 1997, a traditional venture capital firm, which, in 1999 began to diversify into social investment. Rod is a past chair of Shelter (the homeless charity) and JustGiving.com as well as serving on the boards of several online businesses including Avanza, Scandinavia’s largest online stockbroker. He is also a non-executive director of the Ethical Property Company and AXA Investment Managers, and chair of The Green Thing. Rod teaches Social Finance at the Said Business School (University of Oxford). Tim Radjy, Switzerland Tim Radjy is the Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of AlphaMundi Group and a Trustee of the Global Exchange for Social Investment. He previously worked first for Morgan Stanley Capital International and then for UBS, from 2000 to 2007. In 2004, he became a founding member of UBS Philanthropy Services, providing the bank’s wealthiest international clients with guidelines on foundation governance, NGO selection and impact evaluation. Tim also spent time in Bolivia in 2006 to review the Swiss Development Agency’s microfinance program and help it spin off into an independent foundation. Tim holds a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Geneva and a Private Banking Diploma from UBS. AlphaMundi Group Ltd was formally established by 10 business partners in 2007, as a commercial venture with a social mission, and is based in Zurich, Switzerland. Alphamundi Group offers its advisory services to a diversified group of clients, ranging from social investment funds and international and local non-profits, to commercially-orientated institutions. Leonardo Letelier, Brazil (joining online) Leonardo is the Founder and the Chief Executive Officer of sitawi. Over 5 years of investment experience and 10 years in strategic and social consulting at McKinsey & Co and independently. Former director of Ashoka’s Full Economic Citizenship Initiative in Brazil. Harvard Business School MBA, USP - Industrial Engineering. sitawi is a social fund that increases the impact of organizations and companies committed to social and environmental causes. We do this by providing loans and advice, introducing a new form of social financing in Brazil. Majora Carter, US (joining online) Majora Carter is a visionary voice in city planning who views urban renewal through an environmental lens. The South Bronx native draws a direct connection between ecological, economic and social degradation. Hence her motto: "Green the ghetto!" With her inspired ideas and fierce persistence, Carter managed to bring the South Bronx its first open-waterfront park in 60 years. Then she scored $1.25 million in federal funds for a greenway along the South Bronx waterfront, bringing the neighborhood open space, pedestrian and bike paths, and space for mixed-use economic development. Carter, who was awarded a 2005 MacArthur "genius" grant, served as executive director of Sustainable South Bronx for 7 years, where she pushed both for eco-friendly practices (such as green and cool roofs) and, equally important, job training and green-related economic development for her vibrant neighborhood on the rise. Since leaving SSBx in 2008, Carter has formed the economic consulting and planning firm the Majora Carter Group, to bring her pioneering approach to communities far outside the South Bronx. Carter is working within the cities of New Orleans, Detroit and the small coastal towns of Northeastern North Carolina. The Majora Carter Group is putting the green economy and green economic tools to use, unlocking the potential of every place -- from urban cities and rural communities, to universities, government projects, businesses and corporations -- and everywhere else in between. Jonathan Robinson, England Jonathan Robinson has created and developed many initiatives that have changed the commonly accepted processes and patterns in society and business. Jonathan is a co-founder and Executive Director of The Hub, a multi-sited incubator for social innovation currently located in 22 cities across the world, a social enterprise that is networking imaginative and enterprising initiatives across the globe and is an exceptionally successful initiative in its own right. To date, Hub have created ~1,500 ventures, including profitable businesses such as Onzo Smart Meters, urban wind turbine firm Quiet Revolution and recycled footwear gurus Worn Again. Jonathan co-authored a book ‘Careers Un-Ltd’, worked on social ventures with people ranging from The Cabinet Office, UNICEF, The Tate Modern, Barcelona City Council, community activists in Soweto, the Asian Heritage Foundation, Leeds City Council, and the London Development Agency, working in multi-disciplinary teams of architects, scientists, investors, technologists and activists. Johann Heep, Austria After some years in Delhi (India), eventually landed in Vienna (Austria). Got a Master degree in Information and Knowledge Management at the University of Eisenstadt (Austria).
